How to Kill Spider Mites and Control Infestations:
Early detection and identification is key. Spider mites are usually the “two spotted mites” or the “red spider mites”. They are typically found on the undersides of leaves but may colonize entire plants during outbreaks. They can be very destructive to plants in grow rooms, indoors and in greenhouses which are susceptible due to hot, dry conditions. They are commonly found outdoors when their natural enemies have been killed off by insecticide use. Beneficial insects such as ladybugs, lacewings and predatory mites are their natural enemies.
Spider mites are very small but also prolific which is why heavy infestations often build up unnoticed before plants begin to show damage. You can use a magnifying glass to verify that you have mites since they are barely visible at 1/50 of an inch in length and difficult to see with the naked eye. You can also hold a piece of white paper under a leaf and shake or scrape the underside of the leaf to cause the mites to fall on to the paper, they will appear as very small dots on the paper.
Bronzing, stippling and burning on the top side of leaves are all characteristic signs of spider mites. Damaged leaves turn yellow, dry up and drop from the plant. Heavily infested areas are accompanied by fine silk webbing on the underside of leaves, between plant stems and at leaf junctions. If the infestations are not removed the plant will die.
Liquid Ladybug™ is not registered with Federal Environmental Protection Agency since it qualifies for exemption under FIFRA section 25(b) as a minimum risk pesticide.Active Ingredients: Organic Peppermint Oil & Geraniol
